Discussion

Oregano EO (OEO) was able to inhibit, in vitro, the germination and development of the filamentous form of C. albicans Moreover, OEO also inhibits the three phases of Candida biofilms, i.e., their adhesion, formation, and mature state. (1)

Caprilyc acid is potent against a variety of fungal pathogesns like Candida and Trichophyton. The data suggests the emergence of a novel therapy for effective disease management and overcoming anti-fungal drug resistance. (2)

Aloe barbadensis miller or Aloe vera has been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times with antifungal activity known to be amongst its medicinal properties. Aloe vera leaf extract exhibits antifungal properties against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. (3)

Aloe vera has been proven to have a potent effect against several parasites such as Trypanosoma brucei, Plasmodium falciparum, Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia lamblia, and Leishmania. (4)

Caprylic acid may have an antiparasitic effect against various fish parasites, including parasites classified as monogenea, ciliates and myxosporea.(5)

In cell and animal models, larch arabinogalactan is capable of enhancing natural killer cells and macrophages as well as the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In humans a clinical study demonstrated that larch arabinogalactan increased the body’s potential to defend against common cold infection. Larch arabinogalactan decreased the incidence of cold episodes by 23 %.(6)

Anise essential oil is a promising phyto-remedy with important antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. Inhibition high percentages were found for the p. aeruginosa and S. aureus strains, but also excellent antifungal activity against C. albicans was ascertained.(7)

Phenylpropanoids found in Anise have shown some effectiveness against Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes malaria in humans, and Mycobacterium intracellulare, a bacterium which can cause illness in immunocompromised patients.(8)

Juglone found in Black Walnut demonstrated excellent antibacterial activities by inhibiting the formation of bacterial or fungal biofilms or by inducing abnormal oxidative stress and DNA insertion. (9)

Recently, A. annua has been revealed to show inhibitory effects against parasites (e.g. Plasmodium, Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania, Acanthamoeba, Schistosoma), viruses (e.g. hepatitis A virus, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, human immunodeficiency virus), fungi (Candida, Malassezia, Saccharomyces spp.) and bacteria (Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Listeria, Haemophilus, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Salmonella, Yersinia spp.).(10)

Ethanolic extract of G. lucidum (derived from Reishi mushroom) possesses potent antimalarial activity and also could help ameliorate the attendant Plasmodium-induced liver damage due to malarial infection. (11)

Lingzhi or Reishi Medicinal Mushroom illustrates the preventive effect against C. albicans and C. glabrata biofilms along with its nutritional value.(12)
