Discussion
Heavy metal body burden can contribute to chronic disease, as well as interfere with the body’s capacity to recover from illness. The five case studies presented in the study show that reduction in toxic heavy metals (74% average decrease) was achieved without side effects, with the use of modified citrus pectin (MCP).* (1)
Treatment with MCP increased urinary excretion of lead, arsenic, and cadmium in healthy volunteers, without side effects or depletion of essential elements. In a case study of five patients, there was an average of 74% reduction in lead or mercury without side effects with the use of MCP alone or with a MCP/alginates combination. Treatment with MCP dramatically decreased the levels of lead in blood and increased the levels of lead in urine in children hospitalized with lead toxicity. Fecal uranium excretion was promoted by MCP/alginate supplement without side effects in a family with low-level chronic exposure from their environment and diet.* (2)
Clinoptilolite Zeolite incorporated into the diet may be effective in fighting mycotoxins by direct absorption. Affinity toward aflatoxins, zearalenone, ochratoxin, and the T2 toxin was proven in vitro in the presence of aminoacids and vitamins, where the latter were not absorbed by the clinoptilolite material. The specificity for aflatoxin M1 was also shown in vivo, and the dietary administration of clinoptilolite zeolite, especially of the material with the smallest particle size at the rate of 200 g per cow per a day, effectively reduced milk aflatoxin M1 concentration in dairy cattle.* (3)
The clinoptilolite zeolite capacity to adsorb harmful substances in the gastrointestinal tract that are not confined only to micotoxins and ammonia but include heavy metals and organic compounds as well. For instance, in lead-intoxicated mice, a clinoptilolite zeolite decreased the lead accumulation in the intestine by more than 70%.* (3)
As a green and natural microbial metabolite, Fulvic Acid (FA) is widely used in environmental remediation because of its good adsorption complexation and redox ability. FA can control the biotoxicity and migration ability of some metals, such as Pb, Cr, Hg, Cd, and As, through adsorption complexation and redox reactions.* (4)
In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated that Humic Acids (HAs) could efficiently remove Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by absorbing the toxin. Therefore, HAs treatment can ameliorate AFB1-induced hepatic injury by enhancing gut barrier function, regulating gut microbiota, and adsorbing toxin.*(5)
With worldwide environmental accumulation of plastics and their recognized degradation into smaller particles, attention to their impacts on ecological systems and humans has been increasing recently. In this study, D. magna neonates were used to assess and compare the acute toxicities of polystyrene microplastic particles (MPPs) and nanoplastic particles (NPPs) in the absence and presence of humic acids (HAs), an important environmental factor in aquatic systems. Study results showed that NPPs were much more toxic than MPPs in that 10 mg L−1NPPs induced over 70% of death in 96 h but MPPs (as high as 400 mg L−1) caused no mortality under all tested conditions. More importantly, we revealed a potent protective role of HA against NPP toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations. The effect was concentration dependent, as 50 mg L−1 HA subdued the NPP (400 mg L−1) toxicity effect completely. NPPs elicited the up-regulation of all examined genes while HA diminished the change appreciably, further confirming its detoxifying role against NPP toxicity.* (6)
Activated charcoal adsorbs ingested toxins within the gastrointestinal tract preventing the systemic absorption of that toxin. Activated charcoal only adsorbs toxins that are in the dissolved liquid phase via direct contact. Orally administered activated charcoal does not get absorbed through the gastrointestinal lumen and acts within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in its unchanged form. Most ingested toxins will have decreased systemic absorption in the presence of activated charcoal, including acetaminophen, aspirin, barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, theophylline, phenytoin, and a majority of inorganic and organic materials.* (7)
Various modern authors have described the use of medicinal charcoal in the treatment of flatulence, gaseous distention, and aerocoly. It has also been recommended as a nonspecific antidiarrheal agent, and for use in dysentery, cholera and infantile diarrheas in addition to specific medication. As an intestinal deodorant, charcoal has the capacity to adsorb the products of food decomposition, especially gases formed in the colon by fermentation and causing flatulence or diarrhea.*(8)
