Inadequate sleep impact on the skin.

Sleep plays an important role in repairing and rejuvenating the skin.

It is evident that when we don’t get enough of sleep at night, it impacts our overall well-being. It also effects tremendously the health of our skin. A study conducted earlier this year at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) in Ohio has become the first to prove that inadequate sleep increases the signs of aging.

Researchers studied two groups of women – one sleep-deprived group and another good-rested group  – and found statistically significant differences. Women who had inadequate sleep showed an average of twice as much aging. These signs included fine lines, uneven pigmentation, and reduced elasticity.

Researchers also tested both groups with various skin stressors and found that sleep quality had a measurable effect on recovery time.

Seventy-two hours after a mild sunburn, redness and inflammation remained higher in the sleep-deprived group.

Sleep-deprived group also showed a decline in hydration and skin barrier functions.

The recovery ability of the good sleepers was 30 percent higher than that of the sleep-deprived women.
