Breast Implants Side Effects: Can breast implants make you sick?

In recent years, the discussion surrounding breast implants has evolved beyond aesthetics and into the realm of health concerns. While many individuals opt for breast augmentation procedures to enhance their appearance, a growing body of research suggests that these implants may harbor hidden dangers, potentially leading to serious health issues.

Toxic Ingredients

From heavy metals like arsenic and nickel to environmental toxins such as benzene and ethylene oxide, the substances present in breast implants have been linked to a range of adverse health effects, including lymphoma, breast cancer, DNA damage, oxidative stress, neurological issues, and the troubling phenomenon known as breast implant illness.

Heavy metals are substances that can accumulate in the body over time, wreaking havoc on our health in various ways. Mercury, arsenic, cadmium and nickel, commonly found in breast implants, are known to disrupt cellular function and can lead to a host of health problems, including cancer. Studies have shown a correlation between the presence of these heavy metals and an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

But it’s not just heavy metals that pose a threat. Environmental toxins like benzene, ethylene oxide, xylene and trichloroethylene which are often used in the manufacturing process of breast implants, can also have detrimental effects on our health. These chemicals have been linked to DNA damage, oxidative stress, and neurological disorders such as Parkinsonism, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma as well as liver cancer. Thus, raising serious concerns about their long-term impact on individuals with breast implants.

One of the consequences of breast implants is the development of breast implant illness (BII). BII is a term used to describe a constellation of symptoms that some individuals experience after undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Some develop BII symptoms shortly after augmentation, some years later.

So, why some women develop BII and some women don’t? From my personal experience and by working with women who have breast implants, I have observed that there must be 2 factors in place: a trigger and genetic variants, in particular related to methylation, detoxification and glutathione synthesis.

The trigger can be anything from viral infection, car accident or a stressful divorce – anything that promotes a long lasting emotional and/or physiological stress. Women may feel an onset or exacerbation of symptoms during perimenopause when women go through a dramatic hormonal shift.

Implant life varies from person to person, and the longer an individual has them, the more likely that person is to develop symptoms.

Research into the safety of breast implants has yielded concerning findings. A study published in JAMA Surgery found that silicone breast implants are associated with an increased risk of certain autoimmune and connective tissue diseases.

Another study published in the JAMA Network found evidence of silicone leakage from breast implants into surrounding tissues, highlighting the potential for systemic exposure to harmful substances.

Since 2021 FDA has updated the risk and complications of breast implants related to breast cancer, anaplastic large cell lymphoma BIA-ALCL, Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), and Mesenchymal Tumors, including Sarcomas.

As stated by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons breast implants are associated with the aplastic large cell Lymphoma BIA-ALCL. It is a type of lymphoma that can develop around breast implants. This is a cancer of the immune system, not a type of breast cancer.

I can share my personal journey with breast implant side effects. After nearly 9 years with implants, I began experiencing symptoms resembling mold toxicity, prompting me to undergo thorough Total Tox Burden testing.

The results revealed high levels of toxins used in the rubber and plastics. The same test also showed high levels of heavy metals, in particular nickel. This lead me to suspect breast implants being a primary source of these dangerous toxins. Upon further investigation I came across FDA Summary of Breast Implants ingredients. Breast implants contain more than 40 toxins, including carcinogens, neurotoxins and heavy metals.

This finally shed the light on the root causes of my health issues. Let’s explore the evidence-based effects of each ingredient found on my test results further.

  • Research shows that both nickel as well as arsenic are linked to breast cancer.

  • Tiglyglycine or Trichloroethylene is used as a solvent in the shell of breast implants, per this study. This chemical is associated with Parkinsonism and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • HEMA is a metabolite of ethylene oxide which is used to sterilize implants, per this study. This chemical is linked to lymphoma and leukemia, per this study.
  • 4-MHA is a metabolite of xylene. Exposure to xylene is known to result in immunologic, respiratory, carcinogenic, reproductive, neurologic, and cardiovascular effects, per this study

Silicone breast implants may absorb environmental chemicals from surrounding tissues and over time build up in the body, according to a new study by Oregon State University. This explains heightened levels of the Methylparaben and herbicide (2,4-D) on my test results despite consuming 100% organic foods and using clean products.

In response to these concerning findings, I took proactive steps to reclaim my health. Refusing to wait for a severe diagnosis, I opted for explantation using the en bloc technique.

Now, I diligently engage in my Anti-Candida and Anti-Parasite cleanse (as these imbalances are common with breast implants) as well as monthly detox programs to purge my body of these harmful toxins and heavy metals and rebalance my gut microflora. Following my first detox post-explant, I’ve experienced immediate relief from insomnia and brain fog.

Given the mounting evidence of the health risks associated with breast implants, it’s essential for individuals considering breast augmentation to weigh the potential consequences carefully. While many may view breast implants as a safe and routine cosmetic procedure, the reality is far more complex.

In conclusion, the presence of heavy metals and environmental toxins in breast implants poses a significant health risk to individuals undergoing breast augmentation surgery. From the development of plethora of various symptoms to breast cancer and lymphoma, the potential consequences are too grave to ignore.

As you can see from my test results, breast cancer isn’t solely attributed to genetic predispositions (BRCA and HBOC genes) or hormonal imbalances associated with reproductive organs.

Rather, in our contemporary Western society, the intricate interplay of environmental toxins and heavy metals with estrogen-like properties can significantly contribute to the development of hormone-mediated cancers.

When coupled with genetic factors, particularly those related to methylation and detoxification processes, and hindered detoxification mechanisms stemming from gut imbalances, and persistent inflammation (which may be induced by factors like breast implants), the risk of cancer initiation and progression becomes substantially heightened.

How to Heal from Breast Implant Illness

If you have breast implants and have developed various health issues, the first step is to eliminate a constant source of toxicity from your body (breast implants) by getting a proper explant (via en bloc or full capsulectomy technique).

Although it’s essential step in promoting healing, the truth of the matter is that breast implants disturb homeostasis in the body by affecting all physiological systems including digestive, endocrine, nervous, immune, detoxification, metabolic system.

Thus, it’s important to optimize the health of all these systems because everything in the body is interconnected and all the systems and organs work in tandem with each other.

For those considering explant surgery, adopting a functional medicine strategy before and after the procedure can aid in diminishing inflammation, facilitating detoxification, reversing existing dis-ease dynamics and promoting overall well-being.
