FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE BOSTON MA:
A ROOT-CAUSE APPROACH TO HORMONES, THYROID, GUT HEALTH & SKIN
Functional medicine Boston MA clients have trusted for over two decades comes from Natalie Maibenko’s clinical, science-led approach to skin and health. As a certified functional medicine practitioner, Natalie has long applied that same root-cause investigation to hormone imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, gut health, and chronic inflammatory skin conditions that conventional medicine often leaves unresolved.
As of July 1, 2026, all functional medicine Boston MA care is conducted virtually, meaning your care continues uninterrupted, with the same depth and rigor, regardless of where you are.
Functional Medicine Boston MA: An Established Practice, Now Fully Virtual
Unique Verve has built its reputation in Boston over more than two decades — recognized by Allure, InStyle, Boston Magazine, and the Improper Bostonian, and trusted by hundreds of clients navigating hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, and skin conditions that conventional approaches couldn't resolve. That clinical foundation hasn't changed. What has changed is accessibility: every functional medicine consultation is now conducted virtually, meaning the same comprehensive, root-cause investigation Boston clients have relied on is available without an office visit — and without interruption, regardless of where your life takes you next.
This matters for two kinds of clients. If you've worked with Natalie before, nothing about your care changes — your protocol, your follow-ups, your relationship with your practitioner continues exactly as it has.
If you're new to Unique Verve, you're gaining access to an established, credentialed practice with a long track record in the Boston medical and wellness community, now delivered with the convenience of virtual care.
What We Investigate —
and Why It Matters
Every functional medicine Boston MA consultation begins with a comprehensive intake and, where indicated, advanced laboratory testing through Vibrant Wellness. Rather than relying on standard reference ranges built around population averages, we examine your individual patterns across multiple interconnected systems.
Testing may evaluate:
- Hormones and their metabolites
- Gut health and microbiome status. Given the connection between gut health and skin conditions including rosacea, eczema, and hormonal acne, this panel is frequently foundational to both functional medicine and functional dermatology cases.
- Fasting blood sugar, HbA1C, fasting insulin
- Liver panel and other basic lab markers
- Micronutrient status and their genetic impairments (SNPs)
- Heavy metals, mycotoxins and endocrine disruptors
- Full thyroid panel — including TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. Standard thyroid testing through conventional medicine measures TSH alone — a narrow window that frequently misses subclinical hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in their early stages.
Not every client requires every panel. Testing is recommended based on your specific symptom picture and health history, not as a default protocol.
Conditions Commonly Addressed
Boston clients seek functional medicine support for a wide range of concerns, frequently after conventional approaches have addressed symptoms individually without resolving the underlying pattern:
- Thyroid dysfunction — including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, subclinical hypothyroidism, and thyroid hormone conversion issues that produce symptoms despite "normal" TSH levels.
- PCOS and hormonal imbalance — irregular or absent cycles, insulin resistance, androgen excess, and the skin and metabolic symptoms that accompany them. Conventional care frequently treats PCOS and thyroid dysfunction as unrelated, despite both being hormonal in nature.
- Estrogen dominance — heavy periods, PMS symptoms, breast tenderness, fibroids, and inflammatory skin conditions including cystic acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
- Gut-skin axis dysfunction — chronic bloating, food sensitivities, and skin conditions (acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis) that share a common root in intestinal permeability and microbiome disruption.
- Chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation — joint pain, recurring headaches, frequent illness, recurrent UTIs, allergies that improve once root drivers are identified and addressed.
- Autoimmune conditions — Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, vitiligo where systemic root-cause investigation reveals contributing factors conventional management doesn't address.
How Functional Medicine Works at Unique Verve
Functional Medicine Consultation
Your first consultation is a comprehensive 50–60 minute session covering your full health history, current symptoms, lifestyle factors, and skin concerns. This session establishes the clinical picture and determines whether advanced laboratory testing is indicated.
Fee: $300.
Advanced Functional Lab Testing (where indicated)
If testing is recommended, panels are ordered through Vibrant Wellness. Results are typically returned within 2–3 weeks. Natalie reviews your findings with you as part of the 3-month VIP Functional Medicine Program — lab costs are separate from the program fee, and review is included provided tests are ordered and results received within your 3-month program window.
Your Personalized Protocol
Based on your history, symptom checklist and test results, a targeted protocol is developed covering nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle modifications, and — where appropriate — topical skincare recommendations. Every recommendation is evidence-based and specific to your individual findings.
Ongoing Support & Adjustments
Regular follow-ups, educational resources, and compassionate guidance ensure progress toward optimal health. Protocols are adjusted as your body recalibrates. Healing isn't linear -- and you're not doing this alone.
Functional Dermatology — Where Skin Meets Systemic Health
For clients whose primary concern is their skin, Unique Verve offers functional dermatology — an approach that investigates the internal drivers of chronic skin conditions rather than suppressing their expression topically.
If you’ve cycled through topical prescriptions, antibiotics, or retinoids without lasting resolution, the reason is almost always systemic. Rosacea has been linked to H. pylori infection, SIBO, and histamine intolerance. Hormonal acne in adult women typically reflects upstream imbalances in androgen metabolism, gut microbiome composition, or insulin sensitivity. Eczema and psoriasis frequently involve intestinal permeability and immune dysregulation that no amount of barrier cream will resolve at the root.
Even something as seemingly unrelated as chronic dry skin can trace back to a hormonal or gut-driven cause — often surfacing only once the full clinical picture is investigated.
Functional dermatology identifies which systems are driving your skin’s behavior — and builds a protocol that addresses them directly.
Due to the individualized nature of the functional medicine program, a limited number of new clients are accepted each month.
What a Client Said
I was diagnosed with a thyroid issue at the beginning of the year and have always had PCOS. I was told to go to an endocrinologist but had to wait 4 months for an appt. I went to Natalie immediately for help to try to address my thyroid issue. She really listens and digs into the full picture of everything ever in your health history to connect symptoms that I had never realized were connected or could be changed about me (ie dry skin). She educated me so much and truly has steered me into living a completely different lifestyle when it comes to what/how/when I eat, drink, sleep etc! When it finally came time for my endocrinologist appointment, I was educating my endocrinologist and asking good questions and not just taking what she said as the answer. The endocrinologist wanted to treat the pcos and thyroid issue as 2 separate issues, she didn’t believe they were related… despite both being hormonal issues!? They also didn’t do a full thyroid panel or compare my results to the results from 4 months earlier. Natalie did and pointed out that despite some being too low/high, some of the numbers were improving. It’s been 6 months now and I just got my period for the first time in several YEARS. So it feels amazing to know that my efforts, through Natalie’s guidance, are slowly healing my body. I know it won’t happen overnight but am so grateful to have Natalie as a resource in my life to help me overcome health issues, especially when traditional doctors don’t have answers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will my care change now that consultations are virtual?
No — functional medicine Boston MA care continues exactly as it has: your protocol, your follow-up cadence, and your relationship with Natalie continue exactly as they have. The only change is that sessions are conducted virtually rather than in person, which many clients find is more convenient to schedule consistently.
Q: I'm a current Boston client — do I need to do anything differently to continue care?
No action is needed on your end. Continue booking through the same process. If you have any questions about scheduling or your ongoing protocol, reach out directly and Natalie will walk you through it.
Q: How is this different from seeing a conventional doctor or endocrinologist in Boston?
Conventional medicine is built to diagnose and treat disease within standard reference ranges reflecting population averages. Functional medicine asks a different question — why is this happening, and what systems are driving it? Rather than treating PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, and skin symptoms as separate issues, a functional medicine investigation examines how they connect, often revealing root causes a single-specialty approach misses.
Are Vibrant Wellness lab tests covered by insurance?
Vibrant Wellness panels are not typically covered by conventional insurance. Lab costs are separate from the VIP Functional Medicine Program fee. Natalie reviews your findings with you as part of the program, provided tests are ordered and results received within your 3-month program window.
I have existing lab work from my previous doctor — can Natalie review those results?
Yes — you can submit prior lab work for your Initial Functional Medicine Health and Skin Assessment which is encouraged. Existing results provide valuable context and can inform which additional testing, if any, is indicated. In some cases, prior labs reveal patterns that were within conventional reference ranges but fall outside optimal functional ranges — a distinction that frequently explains persistent symptoms despite being told everything looks normal.
How long before I start seeing results?
This varies depending on the complexity of your case, how long symptoms have been present, and how consistently recommendations are implemented. Most clients begin noticing meaningful shifts within 3–8 weeks of starting their protocol. Deeper hormonal rebalancing, microbiome restoration, and inflammatory resolution typically unfold over 3–6 months. Functional medicine is a process of systematic investigation and targeted intervention — not a quick fix — and results reflect that investment of time and commitment.
Q: Do you still offer in-person services in Boston?
As of July 1, 2026, Unique Verve no longer offers in-person services in Boston. All functional medicine and functional dermatology consultations are conducted virtually. In-person luxury concierge clinical skincare will be available in Estero, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers later in 2026, as Natalie completes her relocation to Southwest Florida — contact us to be notified when booking opens.
