Essential Zinc delivers zinc in its most bioavailable and well-tolerated supplemental form — TRAACS® zinc bisglycinate chelate — at 20mg per capsule, providing 182% of the Daily Value in a single, clean capsule.
Why TRAACS® Chelated Zinc Zinc is available in many supplemental forms — zinc sulfate, zinc oxide, zinc gluconate, zinc picolinate, and amino acid chelates. These forms differ significantly in absorption efficiency and GI tolerability. Zinc sulfate, the most common and least expensive form, is poorly absorbed and notorious for causing nausea and stomach upset, particularly when taken on an empty stomach. Non-chelated inorganic zinc salts compete with other minerals (particularly copper, iron, and calcium) for absorption via intestinal transporters, and are susceptible to binding by dietary phytates, oxalates, and fiber.
TRAACS® (The Real Amino Acid Chelate System) zinc bisglycinate chelate is a patented form developed by Albion Minerals in which zinc is fully reacted with two glycine molecules through a true chelate bond. This structure confers two key advantages: the zinc-glycinate chelate is absorbed through intestinal amino acid transporters rather than competing with other minerals for the mineral transporter pathway, making absorption less susceptible to dietary inhibitors; and the chelate ring structure protects the GI mucosa from direct zinc ion exposure, making it significantly gentler on the stomach.*
Zinc’s Enzymatic Roles Zinc is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymes — making it one of the most functionally versatile trace minerals in human physiology. These enzymes span every major metabolic category: carbohydrate metabolism, protein metabolism, lipid metabolism, nucleic acid synthesis, and gene transcription. Zinc is also a structural component of zinc finger proteins — a class of transcription factors that regulate the expression of an estimated 10% of the human genome.*
Among its most clinically relevant enzymatic roles, zinc serves as a cofactor for copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) — one of the body’s primary antioxidant enzymes — protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage and supporting a healthy inflammatory response.*
Immune Function Zinc’s role in immune function is among its most well-documented. It is required for the normal development and function of T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and CD4+ cells — the adaptive and innate immune cells responsible for coordinating immune responses. Research suggests zinc supplementation supports a healthy TH1/TH2 immune cell balance and supports a normal inflammatory response. Zinc also supports the structural integrity of mucosal barriers in the respiratory tract and GI tract — the body’s first line of immune defense.*
Skin and Wound Healing Zinc is highly concentrated in skin tissue and is essential for keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation — the process that maintains healthy skin cell turnover and supports wound healing. Zinc supports the structural integrity of cell membranes and supports skin and mucosal membrane integrity throughout the body. Zinc also inhibits 5-alpha reductase — the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — which is relevant to skin clarity in hormonal contexts.*
Thyroid Hormone Conversion The endocrine system relies on adequate zinc status for multiple regulatory functions. Of particular clinical relevance is zinc’s role in the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to the active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3) — a step that occurs primarily in the liver and peripheral tissues and is catalyzed by deiodinase enzymes that require zinc as a cofactor.*
Vision, Taste, and Neurological Function Zinc has a fundamental relationship with vitamin A: it is required for the synthesis of retinol-binding protein (the protein that transports vitamin A in the blood) and for the enzymatic conversion of retinol to its active forms. This relationship supports vitamin A’s role in night vision and overall visual health. Zinc’s role in sensory perception extends to normal taste and smell acuity through its involvement in gustin (carbonic anhydrase VI) — a zinc-dependent enzyme concentrated in saliva that is essential for taste receptor maintenance.*
Zinc also plays a regulatory role in nerve impulse transmission, cell signaling, and normal apoptosis — making adequate zinc status relevant to healthy neurological function.*
Reproductive Health Zinc is highly concentrated in the prostate gland and sperm, and is required for sperm maturation and healthy fetal development. During pregnancy, zinc is essential for DNA synthesis, cellular proliferation, and normal growth and development.*

Highly recommend if you experience pain with menstruation. Some months my cramps were so bad I would spend the first 6-12 hours dry heaving. I started taking this supplement consistently every day for the past few months. I now experience almost zero pain when my period arrives.
