Why skin needs to earn its vitamin A

Vitamin A — specifically retinoids — is arguably the most evidence-supported ingredient category in skincare. Decades of research confirm its role in normalizing epidermal cell turnover, supporting collagen synthesis, improving skin texture and tone, and addressing the cumulative effects of UV exposure. But this clinical efficacy comes with a caveat: skin that has been depleted of vitamin A (which is most skin, given that UV light degrades topical and cellular vitamin A on contact) cannot tolerate high concentrations immediately without irritation, flaking, and barrier disruption.

Rather than delivering the highest effective dose from day one — the approach that makes many vitamin A products synonymous with redness and peeling — the system begins at the lowest effective concentration and allows the skin to adapt over time, gradually increasing the dose as tolerance develops. AVST Gel vs. AVST Moisturiser 1: Which is right for you?

Both contain the same introductory concentration of Retinyl Palmitate and vitamin C. The difference is texture and formulation base. The Moisturiser 1 is a cream emulsion better suited to normal, dry, and combination skin. The Gel is water-based — lighter, more cooling, and faster-absorbing — making it the preferred choice for:

• Oily or acne-prone skin types that prefer a non-occlusive texture
• Sensitive and reactive skin that benefits from the soothing, cooling effect of a gel
• Rosacea-prone skin that may experience warmth or flush with cream-based formulas
• Warmer climates or summer routines
• Those who prefer to use the Gel as a hydrating base layered under a separate moisturiser for added comfort

How to use

After cleansing and toning, apply the Vita-Antioxidant AVST Gel to the face and neck and massage in using gentle upward motions. Use morning and evening. Use a minimum of 2–3 full bottles before progressing to the next step in the AVST system (Vita-Antioxidant AVST Moisturiser 1 or 2, depending on your skin’s response). The Gel may also be applied under any Environ cream moisturiser as an added hydration layer.

This product does not contain a sunscreen. Sensible sun protection is recommended at all times.
