The Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream is formulated for evening use deliberately. During sleep, the skin’s repair and renewal processes operate at their highest activity — cell proliferation peaks, growth hormone is released, and transepidermal water loss is naturally reduced compared to daytime when the skin is managing UV, pollution, and temperature fluctuation. This makes the overnight window the optimal time to deliver exfoliating acids: they can work on the stratum corneum surface for an extended, uninterrupted period, producing more thorough cellular exfoliation with less UV-sensitivity risk than daytime AHA products carry.

The formula also combines exfoliation with intensive overnight hydration — recognizing that the two objectives are not in conflict when the right emollients are used alongside the acids.

Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream Key Ingredients and Their Mechanisms

Lactic Acid: The primary  in this formula. Lactic acid breaks desmosomal bonds between dead corneocytes, accelerating their removal from the surface and revealing the more hydrated, even-toned cells beneath. It also acts as a natural moisturizing factor component — attracting water to the stratum corneum while it exfoliates. This dual action prevents the dryness that many acid exfoliants produce.

Glycolic Acid: The smallest-molecular-weight AHA, with deep penetration that reaches into the lower stratum corneum layers where older, more keratinized cells reside. Glycolic and lactic acid together provide a more complete exfoliation than either acid alone — addressing both superficial and slightly deeper cellular  accumulation.

Emollient and moisturizing base: The AHA complex is delivered in a rich cream base containing Glycerin, Sorbitol, and a combination of emollient esters that condition the barrier, prevent transepidermal water loss during the overnight period, and ensure the formula is nourishing rather than drying despite its acid content.

The Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream is formulated for normal, dry, and mature skin types managing some combination of dullness, surface roughness, uneven tone, and the slowed cell turnover associated with chronological ageing and UV accumulation. It is not recommended for sensitive or reactive skin types — the Hydrating Clay Masque from the Skin EssentiA range or the Colostrum Gel from Comfort+ are more appropriate for those presentations. It is also not recommended as an entry point for AHA-naive skin; begin with 2–3 applications per week and increase frequency as tolerance develops.

Particularly relevant for those in perimenopause and beyond, where declining oestrogen measurably slows epidermal cell turnover and leads to the dull, thickened surface texture that responds well to consistent overnight AHA use.

How to use the Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream

After pre-cleansing, cleansing, and toning in the evening, apply your recommended Environ vitamin A moisturiser first, allow to absorb briefly, then apply the Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream over it as the final overnight step. Alternatively, it may be applied directly after toning before the vitamin A moisturiser — check with your Environ practitioner for the layering that suits your skin’s current state. Use in the evening only; rinse off any residue in the morning cleanse. Use daily broad-spectrum sunscreen the following morning, as AHA use increases UV sensitivity.
