Most exfoliating masques rely on a single acid, typically glycolic or lactic, and produce surface-level exfoliation as their primary effect. The Tri Bio-Botanical Revival Masque takes a more layered approach, combining three acids with distinct and complementary clinical actions — addressing the surface, the melanin system, and dermal regeneration simultaneously in a single weekly or overnight treatment.

The three acids and their distinct mechanisms

Lactic Acid: The foundational AHA in this formula. Lactic acid exfoliates the stratum corneum by dissolving desmosomal bonds, accelerates surface cell turnover, improves hydration through its natural moisturizing factor activity, and contributes to the visible brightening associated with regular AHA use. As the least aggressive of the three acids in terms of penetration depth, lactic provides the formula’s surface-renewal and hydration dimension.

Mandelic Acid: An AHA derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid has a larger molecular structure than glycolic or lactic acid, meaning it penetrates more slowly and with less irritation potential — making it appropriate for use in a multi-acid formula. Its most clinically distinctive property is its effect on melanin transfer: mandelic acid inhibits tyrosinase activity and disrupts the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes, making it the formula’s primary anti-pigmentation and brightening agent. For skin dealing with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (from acne or rosacea lesions), melasma, or diffuse sun-related pigmentation irregularity, this mechanism is particularly relevant.

Asiatic Acid: A triterpenoid derived from Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), Asiatic Acid has a distinct mechanism that separates it from both lactic and mandelic acid: rather than exfoliating or affecting melanin, it has demonstrated ability to stimulate fibroblast activity, increase collagen synthesis, and accelerate wound healing and epidermal repair. Research has shown that Asiatic Acid upregulates the expression of collagen type I and fibronectin in fibroblasts — the structural proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. This gives the formula a genuine dermal regeneration mechanism alongside its surface-resurfacing actions.

Sodium Lactate: Provides additional hydration via the skin’s natural moisturizing factor pathway, ensuring the skin is conditioned rather than dehydrated during the acid treatment.

Who it’s for

The Tri Bio-Botanical Revival Masque is for those managing the combined effects of photo-ageing, uneven pigmentation (post-inflammatory, melasma, or diffuse UV pigmentation), perimenopausal skin and the reduced skin renewal that characterises chronological skin ageing from the late 30s onwards. It is suitable for all skin types that have established tolerance to AHA products — not recommended as an entry point for AHA-naive or highly sensitive skin. It is used in the evening, 2–3 times per week to start, increasing to daily application before progressing to overnight use.

How to use as a 10–20 minute masque: After cleansing and toning, apply an even thin layer using the included brush. Start with 10 minutes, increasing to 20 minutes over successive uses. Rinse with tepid water. Follow with AVST vitamin A moisturiser. Use 2–3 evenings per week initially.

How to use as an overnight masque (once comfortable with 20-minute daily application): After cleansing, toning, and applying your AVST moisturiser, wait 20 minutes, then apply a thin layer of the Revival Masque. Leave overnight; rinse in the morning.

Contains AHA: may increase sun sensitivity. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential.
