A leave-on brightening treatment lotion formulated with three targeted depigmentation actives — Niacinamide (vitamin B3), Sepi-White™ (Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine), and Alpha-Arbutin — each working on a distinct point in the melanin production and transfer pathway. Applied directly to hyperpigmented areas morning and evening before the Mela-Fade Serum A+B as the first step in the three-product Radiance+ pigmentation protocol.

Multi-Bioactive Mela-Prep Lotion — Triple-Mechanism Brightening for Hyperpigmented Skin

Uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory marking are rarely driven by a single mechanism. Melanin overproduction, uncontrolled melanosome transfer, and MSH-stimulated melanocyte activation each require a different intervention — which is why single-ingredient brightening approaches consistently underperform. The Multi-Bioactive Mela-Prep Lotion targets three distinct points in the melanogenesis pathway simultaneously, establishing the optimal treatment environment before the more concentrated Mela-Fade Serum A+B is applied over it.

Key Ingredients and Their Mechanisms

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): In the context of hyperpigmentation, niacinamide’s primary clinical mechanism is the inhibition of melanosome transfer — the movement of melanin-containing packages from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes, where they accumulate and produce visible darkening at the skin’s surface. Niacinamide does not prevent melanin from being synthesized; it intercepts it at the transfer stage, reducing how much reaches the cells where it becomes visible. Applied consistently, it has demonstrated measurable reduction in the appearance of uneven tone, age spots, and post-inflammatory pigmentation over 8–12 weeks of use. It also contributes anti-inflammatory activity via NFκB suppression — relevant for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) where ongoing low-grade inflammation at the former lesion site continues to stimulate melanin production after the original breakout or rosacea flare has resolved.

Sepi-Whiteâ„¢ (Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine): A patented brightening active developed by Seppic that targets the melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) pathway — a distinct upstream mechanism that neither niacinamide nor arbutin addresses. MSH is a neuropeptide released in response to UV stress and inflammation that directly stimulates melanocyte activity, upregulating the entire melanin synthesis cascade. Sepi-White works by competing with MSH at the melanocortin receptor level, reducing the melanocyte’s response to this stimulating signal and thereby decreasing melanin production before it enters the tyrosinase pathway. Clinical studies have shown Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine to reduce the appearance of UV-induced and hormonally-driven pigmentation with a tolerability profile well-suited to sensitive and reactive skin.

Alpha-Arbutin: A stable, water-soluble glycoside form of hydroquinone that inhibits tyrosinase — the key enzyme that catalyses the conversion of tyrosine to DOPA and subsequently to melanin. Unlike hydroquinone itself, Alpha-Arbutin releases its active component slowly and specifically at the melanocyte level, producing tyrosinase inhibition without the cytotoxicity, skin irritation, or regulatory concerns associated with hydroquinone. It is among the most evidence-supported topical tyrosinase inhibitors available in cosmetic-grade formulations, with demonstrated efficacy across a range of pigmentation types including UV-induced lentigines, melasma, and PIH.

The Three-Pathway Approach

Together these three ingredients address melanogenesis at three sequential and independent points:

Alpha-Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase — reducing how much melanin is enzymatically produced. Sepi-White intercepts the MSH signal — reducing the melanocyte’s upstream stimulation to produce melanin in the first place. Niacinamide inhibits melanosome transfer — reducing how much of the melanin that is produced actually reaches the keratinocytes where it becomes visible.

No single ingredient covers all three mechanisms. The Mela-Prep Lotion’s formulation addresses the full cascade rather than a single point within it — which is why it functions as a meaningful preparatory step before the botanical serum system that follows, rather than a standalone treatment.

Who It’s For

The Mela-Prep Lotion is appropriate for any skin type managing hyperpigmentation of any origin — UV-induced age spots and diffuse sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne or rosacea, and hormonally-driven melasma common in perimenopause where oestrogen fluctuations dysregulate melanocyte activity. For melasma with a significant hormonal driver, topical management addresses the visible consequence while internal investigation addresses the underlying cause — our functional dermatology approach covers both.

How to Use

After cleansing and toning, apply the Mela-Prep Lotion directly to hyperpigmented areas. Allow to absorb briefly, then apply the Vita-Botanical Mela-Fade Serum A+B over the same areas, followed by the Intense C-Boost Mela-Even Cream and your recommended Environ vitamin A moisturiser. Use morning and evening. Allow a minimum of 8–12 weeks of consistent use before assessing results — pigmentation responds to sustained multi-mechanism treatment rather than rapid single-ingredient intervention.

Daily broad-spectrum sun protection is essential when treating hyperpigmentation — UV exposure will continue to stimulate melanin production and reverse treatment progress.
