Unique Verve’s IdealMag Key Benefits & Actions:
- Magtein™ (magnesium L-threonate) — the only form of magnesium shown in animal studies to cross the blood-brain barrier and support brain magnesium levels*
- Supports healthy synapse number, synaptic density, and neurological function through optimal brain magnesium status*
- Supports cognitive health including healthy memory, learning capacity, and mental clarity*
- Albion® di-magnesium malate provides highly bioavailable magnesium bonded to malic acid — a key Krebs cycle intermediate supporting cellular energy production*
- TRAACS® magnesium lysinate glycinate chelate provides gentle, well-tolerated systemic magnesium repletion with superior GI tolerability*
- Supports healthy sleep quality and restful sleep onset through magnesium’s role in GABA receptor activity and melatonin synthesis*
- Supports healthy stress response and mood stability through magnesium’s role in HPA axis regulation and neurotransmitter function*
- Supports over 300 magnesium-dependent enzymatic reactions including vitamin D activation, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular function*
IdealMag is built on a recognition that not all magnesium supplements are equivalent — and that optimizing magnesium status requires addressing both systemic magnesium repletion and, uniquely, brain magnesium levels. These two goals require different forms of magnesium, and Unique Verve’s IdealMag delivers both through a precise three-form combination.
The Magnesium Insufficiency Problem
Dietary intakes of magnesium are consistently below minimum recommended levels across the general population — a pattern driven by soil depletion, food processing, and diets low in magnesium-rich whole foods (leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes). Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, DNA repair, energy production, neuromuscular function, and the activation of vitamin D. An insufficiency of magnesium therefore has broad and wide-ranging physiological consequences that can be difficult to attribute to a single cause.*
Many common forms of supplemental magnesium have poor bioavailability — magnesium oxide, for example, has a documented absorption rate of approximately 4%.
IdealMag uses only highly bioavailable, research-backed forms to maximize the magnesium that actually reaches tissues and cells.*
Magtein™ (Magnesium L-Threonate) Magtein™ is a patented form of magnesium developed by researchers at MIT, protected under US patents 8,178,118; 8,142,803; 8,163,301; and additional pending patents. It is produced by bonding magnesium to L-threonate — a metabolite of vitamin C — which allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively than other magnesium forms in animal studies. This is clinically significant because the brain maintains its own tightly regulated magnesium pool that is largely independent of systemic magnesium status — supplementing standard magnesium forms does not reliably raise brain magnesium levels.*
Animal research on Magtein™ has demonstrated its ability to support synaptic density and plasticity, and to support healthy cognitive function including memory and learning. Each serving of IdealMag provides 1g of Magtein™ — the research-supported dose.*
Albion® Di-Magnesium Malate Di-magnesium malate is a patented Albion form (US patent 6,706,904) that bonds two magnesium atoms to malic acid — a naturally occurring organic acid that is a key intermediate in the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle), the mitochondrial pathway responsible for cellular ATP production. This bonding serves a dual purpose: the malate ligand enhances the bioavailability of the magnesium by protecting it from precipitation in the alkaline environment of the small intestine, and the malic acid itself contributes to healthy cellular energy metabolism as a Krebs cycle intermediate.*
TRAACS® Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate Chelate TRAACS® (The Real Amino Acid Chelate System) is Albion’s patented chelation technology in which magnesium is fully reacted with two amino acids — lysine and glycine — through true chelate bonds. This structure provides two advantages: the chelate ring protects magnesium from binding to dietary inhibitors (phytates, oxalates) in the gut, and the amino acid transporters used for absorption are more efficient than the mineral transporter pathways used by inorganic magnesium salts. The glycine component also contributes calming neurological activity — glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and NMDA receptor modulator — complementing the sleep-supporting effects of magnesium.*
Magnesium and Brain Health Magnesium plays multiple critical roles in neurological function. It is a natural NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist — blocking excessive glutamate-mediated excitatory signaling and supporting healthy neurological tone. It is required for the synthesis of GABA (the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter) and supports GABAergic signaling, which underlies relaxation, sleep onset, and healthy stress response. It also supports the synthesis of melatonin (through its role in serotonin methylation) and supports healthy HPA axis regulation — the neuroendocrine pathway governing the stress response.*
Magnesium’s Broader Physiological Roles Beyond the brain, magnesium is foundational to: cardiovascular function (regulation of vascular tone, cardiac rhythm, and platelet aggregation); bone health (approximately 50–60% of total body magnesium is stored in bone, where it contributes to bone mineral density); protein and DNA synthesis; and the activation of vitamin D — 25-hydroxyvitamin D must be converted to its active form (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) by magnesium-dependent hydroxylase enzymes. Suboptimal magnesium status therefore directly impairs vitamin D function regardless of vitamin D intake.*
